Eight Corners Rule: State Farm Lloyds, Appellee, vs. Janet Richards, Melvin Richards, and Amanda Culver Meals, Appellants.

Important Texas case argued last week before the Texas Supreme Court dealing with the 8 corners rule. Generally, the 8 corners rule is that an insurer’s duty to defend its insured is assessed by reviewing the claims asserted in the plaintiff’s complaint only, without reference to matters outside the 4 corners of the complaint plus the 4 corners of the policy. The Texas Supreme Court is considering whether the policy language exception to the 8 corners rule constitutes a permissible exception to the 8 corners rule.
